Climate and Weather in Abu Simbel, Egypt

The climate of Abu Simbel

According to Bridgat, Abu Simbel is the temple complex on Lake Nasser built by Ramses II. This Egyptian pharaoh from the 12th century BC. was an important warlord and powerful pharaoh, who built the temples to impress his enemies in neighboring countries. The complex consists of several temples carved out of the rocks. They have effigies of Pharaoh Ramses, his wife Nefertiti and some Egyptian gods. The statues had almost completely disappeared under the sand in the 19th century, until they were discovered by a Swiss. Not only the sand, but also the water of Lake Nasser threatened the temples. With the construction of the Aswan Dam, the temples threatened to disappear under water. Due to a major rescue operation by UNESCO – the temples were sawed to pieces and rebuilt higher – the temples can still be admired.

Abu Simbel is located in the middle of the desert and has a desert climate. During the day it is warm to hot, while the temperature can drop more than 20 °C at night. Warm gusts and sandstorms can occur in the spring due to the rising temperature. The temperature then rises very quickly to an unpleasant height. Rainfall in Abu Simbel is a big exception and rarely if ever occurs.
